The Lincoln Heights ShuttlefreaksThe Shuttlefreaks are kids who are freakin' out for Badminton. They are a gaggle of kids who love to play Badminton. They practice on Fridays at Lincoln Heights Elementary (map) in Spokane, Washington. They also play on Sundays at The Spokane Badminton Club. Here are some of the many wacky things they do for fun: run, jump, climb and sit on walls, smash, drop, serve, clear, sashay, laugh, giggle, bust a gut, and travel to tournaments. Here is a picture of Shuttlefreaks playing badminton at Grand Coulee Dam![]() Aside from all this crazy fun, these wild smashing Shuttlefreaks are learning a lot of good stuff: teamwork, commitment, dedication, sportsmanship, and a worldwide, lifelong sport that takes just two people and one little bird to play. See some more pictures of the Shuttlefreaks here. If you want to make birds fly in Spokane, Washington, there are several ways you can get into the shuttle groove: The Lincoln Heights Shuttlefreaks is a free program for Spokane area youth. There are three different classes-beginning (for basic skills), intermediate (learning some game strategy and continuing to develop skills and coordination), and advanced (for youth who are interested in competing in tournaments in our region). If you want to check out badminton, but don't want to commit, we have just the deal for you, too! Every Sunday afternoon, from 1:30–4:30 p.m. some really great people teach badminton to anyone (you and your favorite grownups, too) who wants to play. The cost for youth players is $1 dollar per session. We hope you won't miss this exciting, lifelong opportunity to get freaky for badminton. If you are excitement-challenged this summer, consider joining us and guest coach Kenny Lu from Seattle for the week-long Smashing Badminton Summer Camp. All skill levels are invited for this camp that is sponsored by the Spokane Parks and Recreation Department. If you are still wondering what on earth minton is, why it's so bad, and how it makes birdies fly, check out this explanation of the sport. Are you an adult who would like to start a badminton program for youth in your area? Here is an article we wrote (it originally appeared in the United States Badminton Association Magazine) about starting a juniors' program. Also, visit our Coach's Corner for the tip of the month. |
