Coach's Corner

The following trainer warm-ups, stretches, and tips are gleaned from a flexibility workshop taught to the Lincoln Heights Shuttlefreaks on January 8, 2004 by Arthur Shaw, Certified Personal Trainer. See more photos here.

Badminton Warmups

You start a warm-up with a little jogging because it raises your body temperature by 1 degree, greatly reducing your vulnerability to muscle injury.

  • 5 minutes jogging
  • Lunge with a twist
  • Arm Swings
  • Side Bends
  • Trunk, Knee, and Hip Bends
  • Push-ups
  • Crunches

Freaks Tip: You can do these while watching T.V.— heat up your body while you chill out your brain!

    Badminton Stretches

A stretch should be held for 30 seconds–2 minutes.
(30 seconds is good for kids)

Freaks Tip: You can stretch to your favorite groovin' music for added fun!

  • Alternate Ankle Stretch
  • Calf stretch 1
  • Calf stretch 2
  • Hamstring Stretch (track stretch)
  • Kneeling Hip flexor stretch
  • Standing Adductor
  • Triceps
  • Shoulder
  • Lats
  • Pectorals
  • Shoot for stretching (after warming up, of course)
3 times per week for maintaining good badminton flexibility. Concentrate on keeping tight stomach muscles (abs) for the workout. This will improve your "core stability."  Contact Info:

    COACH'S TIP: For beginning players
Feed your body good fuel for good recovery. Do you find that you are too tired the day after your workout? Try to eat some raw veggies within 30 minutes after your workout—carrots are a great carry-along choice. And remember to stay hydrated by drinking water throughout your workout. Following these tips will help speed your muscle recovery so you can keep on freakin' on.

    Informative Technique Articles:
    A Short List

This month’s Coach’s Kudos go out to Clinton Chen, who has offered up some very interesting articles he’s seen recently on badminton technique.

A long-time master of the game (if not a perfect master of English Grammar), is Malaysian great Tan Aik Huang. His articles on the fundamentals of badminton technique can be found here: Part A

Also, Tan Aik Huang has an article entitled “Take it to the Limit”, which can be accessed at the Shuttler website

The above articles address singles players most specifically, but also at Shuttler is an article on Men’s and Ladies Doubles Technique
